MDM Zinc v2.5 Support

As most of you already know, the HUD's more notable features are made possible with the MDM Zinc v2.5 API. MDM unfortunately locked and archived their 2.5 support forums a while ago, for many debatable reasons which we won't dwell on here.

The point I'm steering towards is that you too can take advantage of that API when developing your modules. And as I state on the HUD website, you don't have to buy Zinc to get that advantage.

I will soon attach the API help documentation to this post, and you can post requests for help here: http://www.desktophud.com/bbs/index.php?showforum=13

I doubt anyone can match the excellent effort of Peter Blazejewicz, but I will do my best to help HUD developers!

http://www.desktophud.com/bbs/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=151
http://www.desktophud.com/bbs/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=152

I've added the Top 5 list from my Stargate Topsites website to the portal, in an effort to help people to get more from the SG community. The more websites we know about and take part in, the better the experience will be for all of us. And if you run a Stargate website, I invite you to join the topsite. It's free, and a great way to get to know your community better!

http://www.stargatetopsites.com

Domain Name Transferred

I transferred the desktophud.com domain name today to a new provider. This would have produced false positive results regarding manual update checking from within the HUD (Tools > Updates > Resulting update message).

I haven't released an update since v0.6. While I'm currently writing v0.7, it's not quite finished yet. An email will be sent out to everyone when it's ready.

Thanks, and sorry for any confusion

HUD on Windows 7

My netbook (Eee PC 901Go) recently had to have the OS reinstalled. So I took the opportunity to install Windows 7, and test the HUD's performance on it.

http://www.desktophud.com/bbs/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=136

I had to run it in compatibility mode. Apart from that, it works great! It works in all modes from NT4 onward. Hopefully, this should be resolved once I get Flash reinstalled on the netbook, and republish under Windows 7. Btw, the screenshot shows off the new feature of the update system. The HUD will now let you know whether or not there is an Internet connection available whenever you check for updates. Obvious type of status message to display, I know. But it was lacking in the first two releases

Hidden Features

As a child, I was always fascinated by spy movies like the Bond series. What fascinated me the most was the concept of hidden gadgets. Seemingly ordinary items which doubled as invaluable tools for the agent in times of need. I carried this fascination with me into adulthood, and when I started learning to program, noticed a great opportunity to make my very own hidden gadgets - but buried away in code.

Buried away in the Desktop HUD, you will find many hidden featues. The way to get to them is by entering commands into a hidden dialog box. In the current release (v0.6), that dialog box is revealed by pressing the Home button on your keyboards. It's really quite simple - if you enter a command and nothing happens, that command doesn't exist. Try another!

I've been hiding features in the HUD since v0.5b, and it's been accessible via the Home button since then. But as of v0.7, I might start changing that button with each new release. Wouldn't want to make it too easy for you now

I won't leave you any clues as to what they are. All I will say is that as of v0.6, there are 10 commands. Have fun finding them all! I've already started writing more into v0.7

Forum Update

As the forums don't get used as much as they used to, I've created an Archives category, and dumped some of the old categories inside there as read-only. Even though the forums don't get used much, I won't be getting rid of them as I still code the HUD when I get the chance, and would like to release more updates eventually.

Over 1000 Downloads!

You've grabbed over 1000 copies of the HUD, which is great. Thanks everyone! I've been working alot lately on several flash jobs, but development continues on the HUD.

Last night, I wrote a fullscreen toggle for the built in web browser. It has a few minor creases to iron out, but it will be included in the next release. I've also added a new affiliate to the Affiliates module. It's a little nod to our web host, Fan Hosted, and a reminder that, at my discretion, I am still accepting requests for anyone wanting to advertise their company through the HUD.

Notice to all forum owners

A fresh wave of spammers have started targeting forums using Gmail accounts, and some Russian web-based email providers. I've just deleted 55 new registrations from these forums after several spammers got through on my gaming forums. Both IP boards. And both have now been updated to 2.3.6. Please make sure you are running the latest version of your chosen forum software. Chances are good that it will include improved anti-spam features, just as IPB does.
